Important Safety Information
Oxandrolone is FDA-approved for specific medical indications. Anabolic steroids have not been shown to enhance athletic ability, and non-medical use for physique or performance enhancement falls outside approved indications.
Because oxandrolone is a 17-alpha-alkylated compound, liver function should be periodically assessed during medical use. Cholestatic hepatitis and jaundice have been reported with 17-alpha-alkylated androgens, and the drug should be discontinued if liver function abnormalities appear during supervised therapy.
Important
Non-Medical Use
Higher-than-physiologic exposure to oxandrolone can carry additional health risks including hepatotoxicity, lipid profile disruption, and suppression of endogenous testosterone. Product concentration and laboratory verification do not establish that non-medical use is safe or appropriate for an individual.
Potential Adverse Effects
Oxandrolone therapy has been associated with liver function abnormalities, including elevated transaminases and, rarely, cholestatic hepatitis. Periodic liver function testing is recommended during medical use.
Androgenic anabolic steroids, including oxandrolone, have been reported to decrease high-density lipoprotein (HDL) and increase low-density lipoprotein (LDL). Serum lipid levels should be monitored periodically.
In women, oxandrolone can produce virilization signs such as deepening of the voice, hirsutism, acne, and clitoromegaly. Some virilizing changes may be irreversible even after discontinuation. In men, acne and suppression of endogenous testosterone production are potential effects.
Conditions Requiring Medical Evaluation
Oxandrolone is contraindicated in known or suspected carcinoma of the prostate or male breast, carcinoma of the breast in females with hypercalcemia, pregnancy, nephrosis, and hypercalcemia.
Caution is required in patients with a history of cardiovascular disease or risk factors for cardiovascular disease, as anabolic steroids may adversely affect lipid profiles.
Monitoring During Therapy
Medically supervised oxandrolone therapy typically involves periodic laboratory assessment. Because of the hepatotoxicity associated with 17-alpha-alkylated androgens, liver function tests should be obtained periodically.
Serum lipid levels should be determined periodically and therapy adjusted accordingly. Hemoglobin and hematocrit may also be monitored, particularly at higher doses.
